Passwords¶
Updated May 26, 2025
The only two passwords you will ever need to memorize are:
- the one to log in to your user account on this computer;
- the one to access 1Password where all other passwords are safely stored.
Warning
You should never share neither of those two passwords with anyone, even with IT. The only person who needs to know these passwords is you and you alone.
The passwords are complex due to security requirements with our major partners. The minimum required length is 40 characters, which may contain digits and special characters. Our usual technique is to use 6 words separated with a dash (-), which is extremely secure and virtually impossible to hack.
1Password, our password/sensitive information manager¶
1Password is a secure password manager that helps you store and manage all your passwords, logins, and other sensitive information in one place. Instead of remembering dozens of passwords, you only need to remember one master password.
1Password can generate strong, unique passwords for every account and fill them in for you automatically, making your online experience safer and more convenient. It also supports features like passkeys(1), two-factor authentication(2) and secure sharing for teams.
- See Glossary > Passkeys.
- See Glossary > MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) or 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication).
Personal items¶
You can store personal items in your Private Vault, but note that MobilityData is not responsible for their loss if it should occur. In other words, do not rely on 1Password as your sole password manager for anything outside MobilityData.
Sharing passwords/sensitive information¶
Please see Guides & Tutorials > How to safely share a password
Sharing passwords/sensitive information long-term
Please always inform the IT Manager when you share any sensitive information with people outside this organization so a take note can be taken for future reference.
Shared vault¶
You will find a vault named INTERMAL TEAM
inside 1Password where we store information that can be shared with everyone, like Wifi passwords, or the official address of the company. Do not store your passwords in this vault, or anything sensitive.
TouchID¶
It is highly recommended you setup TouchID on this computer and inside 1Password.
Setup TouchID on your Mac¶
You can do this in Apple menu
> System Preferences
> TouchID
. You will need your user password for this. macOS will prompt you for your password every two weeks or so, or when the computer is restarted.
Setup TouchID in 1Password¶
Open the preferences (1Password menu
> Preferences
, or Cmd + ,), then in the Security
section check TouchID and enter your 1Password master password. 1Password will ask you every week (or whatever time period you specify) to enter your master password, or when the computer is restarted.
Note
Your fingerprints are securely stored locally and never leave the computer. Nothing is sent to Apple or any other entity or individual.
